from the roots

faceBack in 1990 while still in high school a hand full of artists got together trying to figure out how to get exhibited…

By 1991, we formed a mobile art co-op called I.O.T.A.(Innocents Of The Arts). I.O.T.A. was a collective of young energetic artists eager to exhibit their work. We promoted artist-curated group exhibitions, held in public and alternative spaces wherever available through the continuous support of Ken Peterson of Edge Gallery as well as Phil Bender, and Paul Schroeder of Pirate Gallery. Wanting to represent their generation of artists, the I.O.T.A. co-op consisted of Painters, Photographers, Sculptures as well as Bands, DJ’S, and Theater. Artist ages ranged from 17 –25 yrs. old, we ourselves were only 18 yrs. old at the time. By 1992, I.O.T.A was a 200-member co-op with a recording label.

In 1997, Revoluciones Collective Art Space was conceived as an extension of those theories. With no start up capital, a condemned warehouse and a DIY attitude, Revoluciones Collective Art Space was created. We believed that art must penetrate the masses and that we must constantly question the definition of what art is. After years of art openings, decadent house parties, sweaty fetish shows, dirty punk shows, underground hip-hop and spoken word events, The Art and Design House at Revoluciones Collective Art Space has finally come of age.
